I've only been reading along for a week now, so maybe this has been
addressed somewhere in the past 35,000 posts, but I don't think
Voldemort has any chance of trusting Snape enough to make him a
useful spy. Remember in the first book, where Snape is berating
Quirrel, about how he needs to decide which side he is on? Well,
duh, Voldemort is right there on the back of Quirrel's head. It must
be pretty obvious which side Snape is on now. If Voldemort thought
there was any lingering loyalty in Snape why wouldn't he have Quirrel
whip off the turban and reveal himself and get Snape to help him get
the stone? or even posess Snape instead? There's also the matter of
Snape trying so hard to save Harry's life, when everyone knows he
hates Harry (or at least Quirrel knows, and I assume V. knows what
Quirrel knows). All Snape had to do was look in the other direction
& Harry would be dead, & no one would be the wiser, and instead,
Snape volunteers to referee the next match to protect Harry!! What
self-respecting death-eater wouldn't take a bitter satisfaction in
letting the little squirt die, even if he didn't think there was any
chance of V. coming back.

But to me the important part is that V. obviously doesn't think it
worth the risk to reveal himself to Snape, even to help Quirrel stand
up to Snape's bullying when the're alone in the forest. How does he
know Snape is loyal to Dumbledore? Did he reveal his true colors
(intentionally or not) before Voldemort was disencorporated (or
whatever).

At the end of GoF, V. says he is going to kill Snape (at least that's
how I interpreted it) and I don't see how Snape is going to convince
him otherwise.

Sarah (who really likes Snape & is worried about him)
