IIRC, about the only canon we have about the head boy/girl posistion is
the fact that both James and Lily had the position in their last year
at Hogwarts. Since they were both Gryffindors and in the same year,
canon is against that particular I-net rumour.
Lately I've been wondering about head-students too: Maybe my memory is
starting to fail on the small details (as soon as I finish the book I'm
reading now, I'll re-read HP again), but it seems that there are years
when there are NO head boys/girls at all, all the work being done by
prefects. This would turn the idea of "head boy/girl" into some sort of
oficial recognition of excelence in studies/duties or other
cathedratical measures. At any rate, during the Sirius incidents of
PoA, prefects were left in charge of the different houses, with no
mention done to any head boys/girls, which is the spawning ground of
this particular theory.
As always, if anyone has any back-up, counter-arguments or any other
form of colaboration, they will be greatly appreciated.
Hope that helps,
Grey Wolf

sense - even though he's too tired to even look up appropiate passages
to back-up his own theories)
