Erm...you're aware that Scott Card (amongst others;
links to follow when I get to my computer at home) has
already done some work in this area, yes?  I point you
toward his book on how to write SF as the main
concentration of his thinking on this topic. Ben Bova
also had a series on this in 'Analog' when he was
editor, IIRC.

Also, in the mainstream, as it were, _Reality Rules_
is an excellent two volume set on using math models by
John Casti. Might be worth a look, if hard SF is up
your alley.
