do then? Tried to slash the portrait and keep on going! He only
thought of getting hold of the password later, didn't he? Surely if
he'd been more of a schemer, more of a brooder he'd've found
out about the portrait and taken it into account, thinking up a plan.

The portrait should have been there in Sirius' day, because both
Molly and Bill recall it, neatly sandwiching the Marauders Era.

GoF ch 31.
"And the Fat Lady?" said Bill.
"She was here in my time," said Mrs. Weasley. "She gave me
such a telling off when I got back to the dormitory at four in the
morning--"

Sirius doesn't seem the type to seek vengeance over a lost love.
His focus seems to be more on avenging wrongs done to his
friends than to himself. Even though he has good reason to hate
Barty Sr., he never talks about trying to get even with him. I also
tend to see the Prank as another example of TVREMOTES
(Tunnel Vision Restricts Empathy Mobilizing Overreacting
Emotional Sirius).

The sad thing is that, as Elkins' real life horror story reminds us,
teenagers just don't need to have elaborate justifications for
hateful behavior. The way I see it, Sirius picks on Snape for no
reason other than teenage bullying. Snape is driven to spit-flying
rage, motivating more such behavior from Sirius. Snape starts
spying on Sirius and his friends, hoping to get them into trouble.
Snape finds out about Remus and the willow and (finally!) taunts
Sirius with the discovery. Sirius, with typical TVREMOTES lack of
forethought, thinks "Hah! He thinks he knows about the willow?
I'll tell him how to get inside. That'll serve him right for spying on
my friends!" and does. Sirius chuckles to himself all afternoon,
and doesn't tell his friends what's so funny until the moon is on
the verge of rising. James, looking out the window from
Gryffindor Tower, sees the moon come up, grabs his broomstick
and...but that would be fan fic. Sorry, got carried away.

Sirius does have current reasons to loathe Snape, since Snape
outed his pal Lupin and threatened him with the Dementors. But
he doesn't mention these to Harry, because they're talking about
school days in that conversation.

Pippin
But Florence...honestly, what kind of name is that for a Death
Eater?
