Ermm...'let'?  IIRC, this particular escapade (as a
model for the rest) was done against the will of Prof
D.  After all, where in canon does it state the he
*specifically*  *permitted* this?

Think it over.  Most of what HRH do is against school
regs and what might well be considered common sense.
And Occam's Razor fits in here, too; most of this
speculation has a rather desperate tone to it, IMO.
