I was struck by the same thing-- he's far more interested in the foe-
glass than a person should be in that situation. Why? Has it been a
long time since he saw himself?
And as for the vampire essay that Lupin assigned his class: I've
always wondered why Snape let Lupin take away the Maurader's Map
after Snape has caught Harry with it. He's already figured out that
it may be directions into Hogsmeade:
"'A letter perhaps, written in invisible ink? Or-- instructions to
get into Hogsmeade without passing the dementors?' Harry blinked.
Snape's eyes gleamed."
When Snape calls in Lupin, Lupin does lie through his teeth and say
it is just something from a joke shop. But, do you REALLY think
Snape believed him?
"Snape pointed at the parchment, on which the words of Messrs. Moony,
Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs were still shining. An odd closed
expression appeared on Lupin's face. 'Well?' said Snape. Lupin
continued to stare at the map. Harry had the impression that Lupin
was doing some very quick thinking."
If Harry can spot the strange look on Lupin's face, so can Severus.
I'm sure he believed Lupin was lying. So, why did Snape let Lupin
pocket the map and walk out with it? Perhaps because of the very next
thing Lupin said.
"He folded the map and tucked it inside his robes. 'Harry, Ron, come
with me, I need a word about my vampire essay-- excuse us, Severus--'"
We'll never know how Snape reacted to that statement, because, "Harry
didn't dare look back at Snape as they left his office."
Hmmm-- Severus, you get more interesting every day.
