It was inevitable, I suppose. After the rush of smugness I felt after devising an acronym which both said what I wanted it to say (Love Of Lily Left Ire Polluting Our Poor Severus) *and* managed to crowbar in a witty reference to an actual SHIP in a twee Shirley Temple song, I thought I could hold out against writing the accompanying filk.

Once upon a time (in high school) I was a voracious parodier of twee songs, long before I'd ever heard of the term "filk". However, I *had* decided to abandon such folly for more Serious Art (like writing backstories for HPFGU), thinking that Caius or another regular HPFGU filker would inevitably take up the Lollipop for me on this one. But alas. As it's now several months since I coined the acronym that launched a thousand ships, I regretfully decided tonight that I could resist temptation no more.

Though I only actually knew the actual lyrics and melody for the first two lines of the chorus of the offending song, the Internet swiftly put paid to any procrastination on that front. I still have no idea how the melody for the verses and the rest of the chorus goes, as my computer refuses to play the midi file for some reason, but this site:

http://www.digitaltimes.com/kids/lyrics_for_kids/goodshiplollipop.html

was kind enough to scupper my last excuse by providing me with not only the lyrics but an idea of where the stresses in the song fall. I used it as my guide to scansion (and, to some degree, rhyming and content).

Ladies and gentlemen of HPFGU, I present to you my inaugural filk...

ON THE GOOD SHIP LOLLIPOPS

VERSE 1

Snape was a greasy boy
Cooler boys liked to shame,
Sirius made a ploy
To mock him, but who came?

Lily, who told Black why
Bullying's always wrong
She was so strong all along
and Snape heard her song.

CHORUS

On the Good Ship LOLLIPOPS
Where the dark chip on Snape's shoulder props
Up a world of sighs
For a lovely girl with emerald eyes.

VERSE 2

Severus pined, sadly spurned

Ever maligned, so he turned
To Voldemort
Took his pain out /on the foes he fought.

[/in an evil war (for those who pronounce Voldemort without a T)]

But his conscience stirred when one day he heard
Of the big bad Dark Lord's new plan
To enlist his help (Ooh! Ooh!)
To dispatch Lily's son and man!

CHORUS

On the Good Ship LOLLIPOPS
It's a short trip to the Hogsmeade shops
Where Snape made his way
To ask Dumbledore to let him stay.

VERSE 3
Severus spied on the plot,
Voldemort vied, and he got
In a rat who did
All he could to find where they were hid.

Snape contained the foe for a year or so
But the big bad Dark Lord came through
He killed James and then (Ooh! Ooh!)
He then slew lovely Lily too!

CHORUS
On the Good Ship LOLLIPOPS
There's a young snip wearing hair that flops
In those emerald eyes
That Snape loves to taunt and demonise!
