Indeed, a poll that I placed in the Movie boards shows that nearly half of the
American respondents hadn't heard of the Philosopher's Stone, pre-Harry. And
that's a group of relatively intellectual adults (since they're in the HPFGU
groups).
But if you read the Levine interview, you'll see that he justified the language
changes by saying that "American readers should have the exact same
experience reading the book as British readers". In other words, he didn't want
them to have to figure things our from context or even look something up right
in the back of the book. Such a condescending attitude from an educator!
