Actually, I always felt that this scene had more to do with establishing the
character of Cedric as being self-effacing and decent. I mean, here's his
father thinking he's got the best son in the world and all poor Ced can do is
try (probably for the hundredth time) to explain to dear ol' Dad that he didn't
REALLY beat Harry, that the dementors were involved and it wasn't a fair match.
And Dad never listens, because he's too busy being proud of his kid.
