And - I forgot the website, but JR said in an interview that Harry 
*does* buy birthday-gifts (and christmas-gifts) for his friends.

As to why none of these are mentioned - it's not meaningful. Some 
details to create atmosphere and give the feeling of being there, or 
to introduce new objects(mainly Harry's birthday or christmas-gifts) 
etc. but mention of Ron's or Hermione's birthday doesn't add anything 
- as yet.

We might see Ron getting extremely happy by gaining complete 
collection trough Harry's gift of chocolate frogs, then we might see 
cards: Lily Evans-Potter, James Harold Potter and Harry James Potter.

We might see Hermione getting a book granting them the means to get 
something.

Informative details... "We learn something medium about Lily" - trough 
Ron's collect-card?
