Hi!
I've also made connections between the two sets of books. I suppose
it's kind of inevitable on my part, as TDIR series was my number one
favorite set of books growing up, and was what got me into the whole
British mythology/fantasy genre (which consider HP to fall under).

I think that both Cooper and JKR do a good job of picking and
choosing elements from the great body of British and Celtic
historical/mythological legends and stories. Both authors have a
great way of creating new legends out of bits of folklore that are
subconsciously familiar, making their new stories seem more "true" as
a result of these elements, IMO.

I also think that Will and Harry share the burden of having the role
of "hero" or "chosen one" being thrust upon them, making them seem
older than their years, although Will seems to deal with it much more
cheerfully than Harry does. Besides this, though, I think that Harry
and Will are very, very different, personality-wise. Will is a lot
more well-adjusted and cocky than introspective, tormented (IMO :))
Harry.

The connection that I noticed first between the two series led me to
develop my pet HP theory, that Ron is a seventh son of a seventh son
(too much space between Charlie and Percy). The Weasleys reminded me
of the Stantons right off the bat. My old copies of TDIR are in
storage, far, far away, so I'm relying on memory, here, but didn't
Will have two much older brothers and a set of twins in his family?
andcome to think of it, a studious brother also--played the flute, I
think? hmm...

TDIR was a great series, and I'll always consider them *my* series
but I think that JKR is doing a much better job already. I kinda wish
I was a kid again, just so that they could be my formative
literature. The big thing that ruined TDIR series for me was the cop-
out ending: "well, Drew kids, thanks for helping, but now we're going
to erase your memories so it'll all just be a dream." I mean, come on!
I don't think JKR will do that to us. But what if she did?! End of
book 7: Harry wakes up from a nightmare of battling a wizard when mum
calls him down to breakfast, and panicked, feels his forehead, only
to _feel no scar_? I _hate_ those kinds of endings. But I bet JKR
will give us something a lot better.

cheers,
