Actually, this ain't so and I don't think you're accurately quoting Yoris, 
either.
Lupin says (PoA, p259, UK ed), 'Your father and Sirius here were the 
cleverest students in the school'.
 Not the most brilliant ever, but certainly a lot more than just 
'intelligent': as Yoris said, three *of* the most brilliant Hogwarts 
students. That *of* is important.
