This really intrigues me. My initial, gut reaction says that, were he to 
have started his work towards becoming an animagus when he was a boy, he 
might well have been able to transform into something other than a wolf, 
something that better suited his nature.

If, on the other hand, he were to attempt to become an animagus now, after 
years of suffering through becoming the wolf, he might well be locked into 
that, as it has become such an inherent part of his psyche. Again, just my 
opinion.

Of course, it could go the other direction, where his revulsion over hiw 
lupine side forces his animagus form to be something docile and 
unthreatening. Bunny rabbit, anyone?
