I've always thought it did, as JKR made quite a bit of reference to
"smells" in Chapter 8, The Potions Master in the SS(US hardcover
version, page 134):
"His classroom smelled strongly of garlic, which everyone said was to
ward of a vampire he'd met in Romania and was afraid would be coming
back to get him one of these days"
and on same page, same paragraph:
"..for another, they had noticed that a funny smell hung around the
turban, and the Weasley twins instisted that it was stuffed full of
garlic as well, so that Quirrell was protected wherever he went."

makes sense to me that Quirrell had quite a BO of garlic that hung
around him. Perhaps Voldermort had a particular smell as he was
incorporated into the back of Quirrell's head, so the garlic was to
mask that smell.  I, too, never bought into the whole vamp theory;
like the unrequited love theory, it is too pat and I will quite
disappointed if JKR succumbs to it. I want Snape to be a nasty,
ill-tempered MAN, not some vamp or half-breed of a vamp.

Cole(who wonders if Snape turns out to be a Vampire, she just
might offer her neck to him -- and that worries her)
