Tabouli's comments about Petunia have emboldened me.
>Maybe until Lily snared James, Petunia festered in silence,
half-resentful, half-admiring of her sister's powers. In fact, it
was *Petunia*, Lily's slim, blonde Muggle sister, that James
originally dated, after she turned up with her parents to watch a
Hogwarts Quidditch match. They exchanged passionate owls all
through term, and met in Hogsmeade on weekends. It wasn't
until James' eye roved onto one of his "own kind", her red-haired
little sister, that Petunia developed the blistering hatred and
jealousy we see today.
I have been reading the messages for some time but have
resisted commenting on some of the creative posts. I am
especially intrigued by the theories about Florence.
But, I wish to post about Petunia and Vernon and the
significance of their names. JK Rowlings has a delight in word
games and names. Therefore I think it is not a coincidence that
P. EVANS is made of the same letters as V. SNAPE. Vernon is
Severus Snape's older brother and that he and Petunia are both
Squibs who met at a Quddich Match and therefore are familiar
with Hofwarts. Remember Vernon's reaction to Harry's letters
and his calling Dumbledore "that crackpot old fool", showing
that he knew about him? Their reaction to magic (even the magic
word "Please") is excessive. My theory also states that Marjorie
Dursley is actually a cousin (or a sister who also changed her
name). It would account for Snape's conflicting emotions about
Harry if he was not only his old antagonist James' son but also
his brother's wife's nephew. A really extended estranged
relationship.
