My suggestion that Snape may have eventually realized that being with the DEs
was a bad idea...ummm was missed in translation or whatnot.... (and come
onnnn then...no one thought that the thought of Snape rolling his eyes during
a marathon pep session with Voldemort and an evil pose down was in the least
amusing?!)
I was trying to point out a few common sensical (for now I'll use that phrase
since I can't think of a better one right now) musings. Like it would be
boring to be in Voldemort's inner circle after a while and being a sheep
could have had something to do with it. At no time did I mean to suggest
that this was the prime or only motivation for Snape's decision-making. I
just feel that it's been ignored in discussion. I would be very disappointed
if JKR resorted to such a simplistic explanation of his behavior.
DIANA theory commentary:
>>Yes, yes, yes! Diana couldn't agree more. She likes her Snape all
angst-ridden and tortured.
But the tension she finds in him around the time of his defection is the
tension between the two world-views represented by the Dark and Light sides.
Not 'Shall I ally myself with the forces of Good or the forces of Evil?', but
the dawning realization that there *was* after all a question to be asked in
the first place. Mere physical survivalism doesn't come into it at all. The
maintenance of sanity and integrity however does.
I HIGHLY doubt that making a decision to leave a very powerful group of
wizards hell bent on destroying the world as most people know it, WOULDN'T
take into account "mere physical survivalism". You almost make it sound like
survival or living is a secondary consideration to morality and integrity.
I'm guessing that most people in the Muggle world (perhaps with the exception
of those who skydive or base jump...;) ) and the wizarding community possess
that all important gene of self preservation. My previous post, I think
explains this better -- that these groups usually decay on the inside because
of power and the greed that comes with it.
Umm to recap: I do solemnly swear that:
Snape is a real jerk sometimes.
Snape is ambitious and often cruel.
Snape is a character whose true intent has yet to be revealed, but involves
black, white, and grey issues, which probably have to do with morality and
basic survival.
Snape is a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll.
Snape could do with a little Pert Plus.
And about 20 other things I don't have the time for here. :)
margaraeta, who adores this character even though he's what my mother always
warned me about
