I would say that in such a situation, survival would *have* to be a 
secondary consideration.  It couldn't be abandoned completely, of 
course -- that's why Snape snuck off to see Dumbledore on the sly 
instead of just standing up in the middle of a DE meeting and 
telling Voldemort he's a shmuck.  But when in comes right down to 
it, Snape abandoned his sworn loyalty to Voldemort in the middle of 
a war which Voldemort appeared to be winning -- and then he followed 
that up by becoming a spy.  Both actions reduced his chances of 
surviving the war by a few orders of magnitude.  The fact that he 
did what he did, rather than grabbing the nearest broom and taking 
off for Australia, suggests that he had higher priorities than 
saving his skin.
