What would that do to the 'it is our choices that make us what we
are' moral of the story? Of course his choices would still be of
major importance: he COULD choose to take his special powers and go
work for Voldemort, or to conquer Voldemort only in order to take
his place as Dark Lord, or to run away to another country and live a
peaceful life. Therefore, this plan would only work if the good guys
could have confidence in what choice Harry would make. But if they
can have such confidence in his choice, more than ten years before it
is made, that choice must not be particularly free!
Imagine how Harry would feel if he found that his parents hadn't
particularly loved each other, but had each broken up with the person
they really loved because they were the two with the best magic or
genes to bear the designer baby? And they hadn't particularly wanted
a baby to cuddle or a child to play Catch with, but only to do their
part to create a weapon against the Dark Lord? And no one had ever
cared whether he'd be happy in life, but they only wanted to use him
against Voldemort. I can see reason for him to throw a huge tantrum,
shouting: "None of you have ever done anything for me that would
give you a right to demand that I throw my life away to save you!"
Altho' JKR has presented Harry in canon as a person who would
continue to fight the Dark Side no matter how pissed he was at the
representatives of the Light Side.
