Your story is a sad one, I'm sorry, and I don't mean to belittle it. 
But there's a difference between math and potions. If you don't get 
your fractions properly reduced to lowest common denominators, it 
won't get you killed. Screw up a antidote and you die.

If you go back to my original post on WWII paratrooper training, 
those soldiers with various disabilities, physical or otherwise, 
would be forced out and either drop out of the army or become regular 
infantry.

So I think Snape wants those unable to grasp potions to drop out (is 
that an option by GoF? I don't remember), because it's better to not 
do potions at all than do them badly.
