       Hey guys!

Maybe Avada Kedavra steals a person's essence as well
as killing them, robbing them of existence even in the afterlife.
Also, it makes those who use it more powerful, giving it a triple-
whammy against it. It kills, it steals the victims' sacred
soul/spirit/whatever, and (as a special extra bonus) it makes the
murderer more powerful.

Interesting idea. I can see Avada Kedavra stealing someone's essence,
although I'm not as persuaded that essence helps the murderous
caster. Wouldn't Cedric's good essence 'damage' Pettigrew, at least
from Voldemort's point of view?

Clearly there are other ways to kill with a curse. Harry and Ron
both point wands at people in a threatening way (Black, Pettigrew,
Lockhart) and they certainly don't know A.K. The people who the
wands were pointed at certainly felt threatened enough to keep
quiet. I've thought there's likely a spell that just "punches"
somebody hard enough in the chest to stop their heart or something
like that.

Actually, I have a little seperate idea that perhaps explains
why these curses are "Unforgiveable," and it's fairly straightfoward
I think. Rather than having some sort of "soul stealing" power
behind it, I think AK is just as the canon states- a curse that
kills quite quickly and evenly. The reason, IMHO, is more likely
these are the only spells that are developed that are SPECIFICALLY
and ONLY designed to kill, harm, or limit another person. It's the
only use for these spells, they can't do anything else. Other spells
can be used to kill, that much is certain. However, they can also be
used for other methods. Take for instance the first Quidditch match
in SS, Hermione uses a simple spell to summon a fire, with the
intention of distracting Snape. Couldn't she just have easily
summoned it inside of Snape's Lungs or body, which would surely be
lethal? But that's not an Unforgiveable curse! To sum up and
finalize it: AK, Imperious, and Cruciatus are Unforgiveable curses
because their sole and only use is to harm others. Yes, other spells
are harmful if used incorrectly, but also could have other uses. I
know most people would immediately think about the explosive spell
Pettigrew used to frame Sirius Black- but couldn't that, as corny as
it sounds, be used in mining? Or Destroying old Structures? What
about in rescue situations? I know these are odd situations, and
also fairly uncommon, but it still can be used for other things.
Also, it may have not been a unique spell("create fireball"), but
rather, it may also have just been a summon fire spell like
Hermione's but with a much higher intensity. Remember when Moody was
teaching the classes about the curses? He said that they wouldn't
have enough power behind the spell, that he "doubted if you could
give me more than a bloody nose." So, taking this into
consideration, could spells be used in different grades, such that
the explosive spell really isn't an unforgiveable curse because it's
not really it's own spell?
         Any ideas? Counters?
