I agree with what others have written about the teacher-student relationship
being a contributing factor to Lupin's reserve, and the difficulties Lupin would
have had as a guardian for Harry. I'm not sure about the religion thing-- the
Potterverse seems to be consistently silent on the subject of religion. For all
we know, they're all regular church/temple/mosque-goers of one kind or another--
it just doesn't come up.

Quite possible, given the obvious prejudice and discrimination against
werewolves.
