Maybe Snape isn't a spy but rather a ambitious indivudal (one of the
qualities of the Slytherins) and recognized that clique so to speak for what
it had the potential to be and out of his own interests and ambitions, kept
his ears to the grindstone, knowing which way the winds blow, but not
wanting to be left behind if something were to happen...
