I like that theory - not that I want Neville to die, but although he's not exactly a 'fan' of Harry's, it could be the death that JKR is dreading to write. (and then Ginny and Hagrid might be OK!)
Re the canaries, I think the miners hung them up high in the corridors or something, as the bad air rose to the top. That way they knew the air was going bad when the canary fainted (I think!).
