Another good point, here is my cop-out:

Ron isn't the brightest student, we all know, and also they are just 
learning how to do it, not all the theory behind it. But then again, 
Hermione is pretty bright, she would have known. I think if they had 
tried, it wouldn't have worked, unfortunately we'll never know. 

But still a valid argument on your part.
