Margaret, Judy, Pippin, and others have all leapt to the defense of
Snape, pointing out that teachers don't make potions either, that the
Beauxbatons and Durmstrang students don't use potions, and that the
market provides ready access to pre-made potions, so why would anyone
bother to make their own?
But in particular, I was challenged on Fred & George and whether they
learned a potion (or general potions skill) to make Canary Creams
while sitting in Snape's class. It was also pointed out that they made
an Aging potion to cross Dumbledore's Age Line.
I don't know if they made the Aging potion or bought it, but I'll give
on this point. I very much doubt that Snape *wanted* Gred and Forge to
be his best students, but they may well have been.
I still think his attitude is inexcusable for a teacher, but given the
subject and the apparent lack of relevance for most wizards and
witches, I'll give up on the point about whether he's taught anyone.
