And I would add, in case no one else has, that the episode at a 
subsequent dinner (Ch 11), where IIRC, Dumbledore has Snape pull the 
other end of the Christmas cracker and out pops a wizard's hat topped 
with a stuffed vulture (just like Neville's boggart grandma/Madame 
Snape wears), is meant to reference this humiliating event for Snape. 
I find it also interesting that this little reminder is created by 
Dumbledore, at a very public event (the Christmas feast), and that 
Snape does nothing more than push the offending hat away toward D in 
disgust. I like that touch. :)
