Speaking from experience as an "over 60," I recall that I have had a 
knack for going to sleep on public conveyances since I was about 40.
So, it might be just Lupin's way of handling boredom. It's possible to
gain full awareness fairly quickly, if something enteresting is 
happening, such as a plane about to land, your stop coming up, or
somebody interesting to talk to sitting by. Moreover, I suspect the 
boarding of the train by a dementor would do it.
