I might be getting confused here, but isn't it vampires that can be cured by killing the 'Master', not werewolves?

I always thought they were the silver bullet 'monsters'.

Anyways, I like your idea about him having been bitten by a DE, but if he was bitten while he was young, and before he went to Hogwarts (didnt they plant the Whomping Willow for him), then surely it would have been before the DE's were formed so to speak, since he went to Hogwarts at the same time as TR/LV.
