I agree, and would add that I  think he sort of 'came to his senses' so to 
speak whilst unconscious. In the Shrieking Shack, he clearly intended to hand 
Sirius over at the first opportunity, but on regaining consciousness, was 
much more calculating. His conversation with Fudge is masterful, *sooo* 
understanding of those poor, confunded children, so concerned for Harry's 
wellbeing whilst only hinting in the most reasonable manner that he should be 
expelled. He's just so calm and cool about the whole thing, quite the hero 
....until Sirius escapes.
