I've gone through several versions of this, thinking at first that he
couldn't hand Sirius over to the Dementors because he was unconscious,
but then, realising he could have done when he came round, assumed that he'd
changed his mind (having calmed down) and came to favour the 'glory theory'.
However, I'm now wondering...the Dementors had had a pretty nasty shock with
Harry's patronus and were returning to their posts when Snape woke up.
Perhaps they weren't going back in a hurry.
I now have a vision of him standing there, summoning them in vain, stamping
his foot in frustration and thinking, 'Damn, what am I going to do now?'
before coming up with his little plan. It certainly seems a radical change of
intent from inside the Shrieking Shack, when pure revenge at the earliest
opportunity seemed to be his goal.
