I think that the four-points spell was more designed for Harry to be able to 
find out which direction to go in in order to get to the end of the maze, not 
to tell him where he was in the maze. So, for example, the end of the maze 
was east, he would want to mainly head east, so that he could get out of the 
maze. At least thats my take on it.
