he get punished for it? Even Dumbledore admitted he was a DE, but
turned back to the light(GOF, The Pensieve). I don't believe the MoM
would have let him off just because of Dumbledore? He still was a DE
and must have done horrible things during the war for Voldemort. Was
it because he was giving them info about Voldemort's actions that they

I write:
I wonder if Snape is on some kind of double-secret probation and his
probation officer is Dumbledore. I'm re-reading the books since I
just got my brand-new UK editions and the thing that jumps out at me
most about Snape is just how miserable he is.
I really get the feeling that of all the things Snape wants to be
doing, teaching is last on his list.
So maybe Snape did something, or saved someone, (or tried to, if the
feeling about Snape being the spy who tipped off D-Dore about the
Potters is right) and Dumbledore threw some of his weight around to
get Snape appointed as Potions Master instead of thrown in Azkaban or
banned from doing magic like Hagrid was.
Perhaps D-Dore's trust of Snape is just his understanding of Snape's
nature. Maybe Snape wants his name cleared so he can get away from
these loathsome brats who don't understand the fine art of potion-
making and he will do what he needs to get that accomplished.
And if this is true, it's D-Dore's own knowledge of Snape's ambitions
that make him trust Snape.
