I can clear this up, as I used to work in an Ice cream store. :) In the US, Sorbet is pure fruit. Just fruit mashed & mixed up. Sherbet is sorbet + milk. 

In other words, if you're lactose-intolerant, you can have Sorbet, but not Sherbet.
