Perhaps she does this because girls traditionally read more than boys, and
she gets a broader audience this way? ;)  Though seriously, I believe that
authors have a sex that they write more characters about, that they feel
more comfortable with.  Mostly it is women who write female leads, and men
who write male leads, but with JKR I believe the situation to be reversed -
she writes mostly male leads.  I have occasionally run across men who write
mostly female leads.  Perhaps she identifies with the male characters more?
JKR could be the tomboy type :)  (maybe that's why I like her books, I was a
tomboy type in school too :) )

I do find it occasionally disappointing that, as Pen says, in a majority of
instances she choose a male instead of a female for the main characters.
But Hermione is _so_ often right up there with Harry that I don't mind too
much either.  Truth be told, Hermione is probably my favorite character, so
her presence makes up for a lot in my mind. :)
