He was likely quite a bit older than Harry when his parents were
attacked.
The attack on the Longbottom's occured some time *after*
Voldemort's disappearence.
Long enough that most people were feeling safe from attack. So
I suspect this was after at least some of the DE's were rounded
up so IMO this occured probably at least 6 months if not a year
or more after Harry's parents were killed. I'm sure people didn't
start to really think they were safe until things had settled down
for awhile.
Most people seem to think he was 2 or 3 when the attack on his
parents occured, which is why there is some thought there may
have been a memory charm involved given his forgetfullness.
We do have reports with Bertha J. that memory charms can
do that to a person.
Now how much he saw, is debatable. Certainly just the disapperance
of the parents even if he didn't see anything is traumatic.
Whether it is Memory Charm or just him repressing the trauma
of the parents not being there, coupled with the reports from
Dumbledore that he goes to see his parents, insane as they
are, there is plenty to give the boy difficulties whether it is
magically induced, or psychologically induced. But given that
the whole series is about magic, that tends to make me, at least,
think there is something magic going on ;-)
