I've been reading the debate on here about sexism in HP since it
started a couple days ago. I haven't posted because I have a hard
time making up my mind about it. If I read one post, I think "yes,
that's right" and then if I read another contradicting it, I
think "oh, actually that's right." Sexism is an issue that I think
about a lot, being part of a feminist activist group in my town, so
it's odd for me to feel so unsure.
This is what I think: Amy Z makes a lot of good points about how many
important female characters there are, vs. how many important males
characters there are. I think she's right, the males have the
majority. However, I don't think it is completely, gigantically
unbalanced (I believe someone mentioned The Hobbit as an example),
certainly not enough that it nags at my mind while I read. I really
feel that we are not far enough along in the series to really judge
whether the books are sexist or not. We know Lily Potter will become
more important, and we also know there will be a female DADA
professor - either of these things could change how the series looks
in terms of the weight males vs. females pull. I think I will be
able to assess things when I have finished reading the series, not
when there is three books left.
