Let's look at the books through that "big picture" frame. These books have
encouraged all children to stand up for themselves, to have faith first and
foremost in themselves, that everyone is different and that it's okay! Note
that each and every character has a flaw. Not ONE character is deemed
perfect (as no-one in our own world is perfect). Note that this is a fantasy
world and yet she draws some great parallels for children in the real world
so that they can relate and become part of the story that she weaves. (Isn't
that what good authors do?) The books help _our_ children understand the
realities of the real world and the harsh realities that adulthood will
inevitably bring. She is also giving them the tools to combat said
realities.
I'll apologise in advance for this and hope I don't get flamed _but_ we have
teachers who _do_ act and teach just like Snape, we have kids whose
Dads/Mums/family members are drunks/drug addicts/physically & sexually
abusive, there are an enormous amount of bullies in education systems around
the globe and there is gross inequality between the sexes both for males AND
females in our less than perfect world. Should JKR _not_ have drawn these
parallels for her readers?

And I agree wholeheartedly with Irene's post. The WW has beaten us hands
down in its ability to accept someone for who they are regardless of sex,
age, colour or religion. Yes, there are still pockets of resistance (aka All
Voldemorts Followers) but THIS is exactly what they're fighting against! The
eradication of discrimination of alltypes is their ultimate goal!

I don't think these books were written to better the lives of women, or to
make any sort of political statement. They were written because she had
Harry in her heart, mind and soul.
