Well, the whole sink in Moaning Myrtle's toilet was supposed slide
away, revealing a pipe large enough for a grown man (Gilderoy
Lockhart, CoS) to climb into and slide down. Who knows how that one
special pipe had to snake (pun, sorry) through the walls to get down
to the secret chamber? Once the basilisk was released through that
pipe, it could ramble through the halls at will until called back.
I don't think that pipe is indicative of the size of the standard
plumbing used when Hogwarts castle was "modernized"... It rather
concerns me that raw sewage seems to be released directly into the
lake, though (GoF).
