Frankie, you are absolutely right. Wizard brooms are brooms
specifically designed and created for flying, and are definitely not
muggle brooms enchanted to fly. In fact, a flying broom is worthless
for sweeping; bordering on non-functional.
That's the key; they are magical objects created to do magical things,
not muggle object enchanted to do magical things.
Why brooms and not carpets?
Because, through out Europe's long wizarding history, brooms have been
the traditional method of flying. Carpets are a foreign method, and as
some one else pointed out, a flying carpet is still a functional
carpet and could easily confuse a muggle.
Do kids, play Quiddtch on their own?
Yes, when Harry is at the Weasley's during the summer they all go up
into a grove of trees that the the Weasley's own and PRACTICE (not
play) Quidditch, but because they don't all have 'sports' quality
broom, they don't have a set of balls, they don't have a playing
field, and they don't have goal hoops erected, they settle for
throwing apples at each other and trying to catch them. Also, they
have to be careful not to fly above the tree line or the people in the
village will see them.
Why not more broom flying at school?
Hey, if it was me, I would be on a broom every chance I got, but there
must be some restrictions enforced by the school. Even over a
wizarding village, you can't have hundreds of wild teenagers flying
around on brooms. Plus, even thought Hogwarts, Hogsmead, and the
forbidden forest represent a substantial track of wizard land. There
have to be some muggles near by. Maybe not real close, but there must
be some muggle somewhere in that area of Scotland, so they still have
to excesize some caution. Plus, I'm guessing brooms aren't cheap, so
most 11 to 16 year old boys (and girls) are not going to have one.
New Point:
Even with all the restrictions on letting people see flying brooms,
there still seems to be a significant amount of broom flying going on.
So they have to have some way to camouflage them while they fly. I
can't believe the Ministry sends a team out erasing memories everytime
someone flys. So I wonder how the average witch or wizard prevents his
broom from being seen while they fly? Maybe an apathy charm or something.
