There's also the example of what happens to the broom after Neville falls off it at the first flying lesson. It keeps drifting toward the forbidden forest after he's fallen off. I'm not sure brooms fly after their owners fall off, but perhaps they are subject to the law of inertia? It doesn't say for certain, but perhaps Neville was facing the forbidden forest when he fell and the broom just kept going in that direction.
