Which reminded me:
Call me slow, but on my most recent reading of PA it
finally dawned on me that when Harry says, rightly, "I
just saved all our lives," that includes Snape. When
Harry sent his Patronus, he, Hermione and Sirius were
surrounded by Dementors; Ron was unconscious nearby;
so was Snape. The chances are good that once the
Dementors had had Harry, Sirius, and Hermione for an
appetizer, they'd have Kissed Ron and Snape as well.
So if Dumbledore tells Snape this, then Snape owes his
life not only to that insufferable so-and-so James,
but now to Harry himself.
So what do you think? Does Snape know this part of
the story? Does he believe it? If so, his turnaround
toward Harry (if that's what it is--knock wood) must
really be an uphill climb for the man. His increased
vindictiveness in Harry's fourth year hasn't been
about the Black/Lupin incident alone, but also about
being beholden to Harry himself. I find the twist
interesting: he's starting to see Harry as his own
person (and someone to admire and reckon with), though
that realization comes under a cloud of anger at his
new indebtedness.
