Since JKR has stated that there will be deaths (plural) I think that
students and others will die. She's already said someone will die in book 5
that is a fan of Harry and that we've known from the beginning. I think
that's Hagrid. Namely because his character's past has been revealed, there
are no more hidden details to be revealed, and he has fulfilled his
"usefulness." He was Harry's first friend, gave him his first real birthday
gift, was his first taste of the wizard world. It would be very hard on
Harry to lose him.
Next, I think that in book 7, Ron will die. I could be wrong, but I think
the foreshadowing throughtout the first books of Ron's willingness to
sacrifice himself to help Harry defeat Voldemort will come down to a
life/death battle in which Ron will choose to sacrifice himself. The good
of the many outweighs the good of the one.
Other lesser characters will die as well, I'm sure. But I think the two
"big" deaths will be Hagrid and Ron.
