Hagrid's "Usefulness" (Was Re: Horrible to write?)

I disagree that Hagrid's character has outlived his usefulness. 
He seems to be about to play a key role in helping the Giants decide 
who's side they're going to play on: Dumbledore's or Voldemort's. I 
think he may have issues to resolve with his Mother.
Also, I think there is plenty of potential to develop his skills as a 
wizard. JKR has said that he will be able to use magic in OOP.

I'm not discounting your theory that Hagrid may be one to die. It 
could very well happen. It would ~certainly~ be a horrible thing, 
made all the more tragic ~because~ Hagrid is still important.

What are the chances that Hagrid gets too enthusiastic with his 'wand 
waving' priviledges, one day, and it backfires on him?
