Well, there's that and I no longer have to write stupid Freudian analyses of stories... don't think I've done that since high school. In my statement re: 'sometimes a cigar is just a cigar', I wasn't trying to give credence to Freud's theories as much as I was trying to say that people who insist on transforming various scenarios in a given story (such as the graveyard scene) should probably keep in mind that sometimes sex is the last thing that needs to be examined. As you point out below, 'motivations and foibles of characters *within the realm* of these stories' are what should be examined in situations like these. And Freud, despite his various complexes, did have a point that can be applied most anywhere: digging to deeply, or trying to impose a system on a story, gives rise to an artificial, incorrect, and pointless construction.
Although, like I said, Freud didn't follow his own advice that often <g>
