Devastation in the World and Harry Potter.

JK Rowlings conceived the whole series of HP books and even had the
ending written before her books became universally popular. She may
have made decisions then about what would make a great story that
didn't take into account the effects of her story on people around the
world.

Think what will happen if one of the three primary characters dies. It
would be like having your very best friend die, except that Harry and
his pals are the heartfelt very best friend to hundreds of millions of
adults and children around the world. If Harry, Ron, or Hermione die,
I can see children around the world being so emotionally devastated
that they have to close schools temporarily because children are too
emotional to carry on. I can see kids (and myself) sitting at home
watching TV and suddenly bursting into tears as thoughts of their
favorite now dead character creep into their minds. I can see massive
absences from work by adults who are so emotionally devastated that
they sit at home in a dark room weeping from the heartache of losing
someone they love so much.

I can foresee an out pouring of emotion greater than the assassination
of the President. Far great than the emotion generated by the World
Trade Center tragedy. (Please, I'm not trying to insensitive to the
WTC bombing. The victims have my greatest sympathy.) I can foresee a
universal heartbreak that nearly brings the world to a stop.

I hope JKR stays true to her original vision and doesn't compromise it
for 'popularity'. On the other hand, if she kills Harry, it will
probably be the last book she ever writes. Of course, she is a
multimillionaire, so she doesn't have to write any more, but I just
can't see the world every viewing her the same. In our subconscious,
she will be the person who killed our best friend. She will be the
person who murdered Harry Potter or one of his friends, and although
we may forgive her intellectually; I don't think our broken hearts
would ever be able to forgive her completely.

I know that personally, I would be devastated. I can easily see myself
sitting around the house weeping uncontrollably for the heartbreak. It
makes my heart ache just thinking about it.

As a side note: I think the heart breaking death will be Neville. That
doesn't make it any easier, because I love Neville. I firmly believe
that Neville is not just a background character. I think his present
is very significant and that he will play a much great role in future
books. I would even go so far as to say he will have a pivotal role in
future books. Neville is a powerful wizard, destine for great things,
but I fear that they will be tragically great things.
