Magic trunks are not necessarily the same as those we Muggles are
familiar with. I presume that Harry bought his in Diagon Alley with
the rest of his school supplies. Chances are that he has a five- or
seven-key trunk. Magic items such as his wand, spellbooks, cauldron,
cloak, and broomstick will be locked with one key; potion supplies,
parchment, vials of ink, and anything that can spill will certainly
be locked under a second key; his clothes may be left in an unlocked
chamber, where Petunia Dursley can see and neglect his laundry.

Dudley Dursley is deathly afraid of magic and magicians. I doubt he
would do anything more with any of Harrys books than pile them up to
use as a step-stool. Remember: He received a pig's tail from Hagrid,
and a serpent's tongue from the Ton-Tongue Toffees Fred (or George)
dropped. He cowered at the very sight of Arthur Weasley. Dudley could
easily be duped into eating a Canary Cream or a Fizzing Whizbee, but
certainly not into touching Harry's wand, trying on a strange cloak,
or attempting to brewing any kind of potion.
