On the aristocracy front, there is some interesting punctuation in the
dialog in the US version of CoS. Mr. Borgin stresses the words
"mister" and "manor" as indicated by italics.

What if Lucius Malfoy is at the declining end of the Malfoy dynasty?
Or, what if Lucius Malfoy is not part of the elite Malfoy family (like
a third cousin), but capitalizes on the name? What if Mr. Borgin, who
is essentially a dark arts pawn broker, is aware that Lucius is
running out of money?

On that front-- Draco is the weak, unsatisfactory heir to what use to
be a powerful family. He really is on par with Neville (and Lockhart
and Rita) for comic relief, isn't he?

WOOF! Yowza! I don't know about Lucius encouraging Snape to leave
Voldemort in the first place, but I can see him playing both sides to
remove Dumbledore AND Voldemort from this plane of existence. After
which, using his connections in the MOM, Lucius would probably wind
up the next Minister of Magic... where it's only a short step to
Dictator for Life.

And of course, Snape did just hike up with sleave to somebody who's
bound to mention it to Lucius the next time there's a MOM function.

Here's a funny thought-- what if Snape's attitude towards Draco is on
NARCISSA's behalf, not Lucius's?

Frankie, with one eyebrow raised.
