Didn't the whole school know after it was over? I think Snape might be
relying on being of some use to Voldemort still, as he works at Hogwarts. But
from being under Quirrell's turban, Voldemort will probably have heard at
some point that Snape turned spy and was working against him.
I also think that maybe Dumbledore doesn't know that Voldemort knows about
Snape (if he does, and I think he does), or he too is hoping that Voldemort
can see some use in Snape being left alive and, maybe, at Hogwarts.
Which brings me to this:
Kylantyhea again,
<<
If our friend Snape did go off to spy for Voldemort, then he would
have to give a lot of excuses to the Dark Lord and his followers to
allow him back into the fold, and as we know, Voldemort is not a
forgiving sort of fellow >>
In The Death Eaters chapter in GoF, as Voldemort is pacing round the circle
of Death Eaters he gets to a gap big enough for 6 of them and says:
"And here we have six missing Death Eaters ... three dead in my service. One,
too cowardly to return ... he will pay. One, who I believe has left me for
ever ... he will be killed, of course ... and one, who remains my most
faithful servant, and who has already re entered my service."
I've always taken the last 3, in the order they are above to be Karkaroff,
Snape and Crouch Jr. So personally, I think Snapes time in book 5 might be a
little short, unless he can do some very quick thinking and talk his way out
of it.
I had been wondering if he could do a deal with Lucius Malfoy, seeing how
Snape has looked after Draco so well in his time at Hogwarts, maybe he could
get him to vouch for him or something. But I doubt it.
