myself, but the Lexicon (and it's usually safe to assume that the research
done for the Lexicon is immpecable) lists James and Lily (and Hagrid) as
Gryffindor alumni. This information is attributed to a Scholastic
interview...in which I *think* JKR is asked which house Lily and James are
in and JKR says something like "Gryffindor, naturally."

his day (although this position is changed to Seeker in the CTWMNBN).
Still, we have to keep in mind that the words "James was in Gryffindor" have
never actually come out of JKR's mouth. The "Gryffindor, naturally"
response was to a question about Lily's house. Not James' house. The only
place that can be sited for James' house is the movie (which shows him as
Gryffindor Seeker on the plaque) and JKR's response to a question "What
position did James Potter play on the Gryffindor team?" Her response being
"James was a seeker." Now yes, I know that this could mean she's verifying
he was a Gryffindor. However, if he wasn't and that's crucial to her plot
in books 5-7, she's not about to let it out anyhow.
On the other hand, I'm starting to think it more likely that both James and
Lily along with Snape were in Gryffindor. I'd like to see the look on
Harry's face if he found out Snape was a Gryffindor. Far fetched, but still
possible as far as I know.
