In PoA, in the section describing their exams, it says they had an 
astronomy exam at midnight at the top of the astronomy tower, and in 
PoA it also makes reference to Ron and Hermione completing star 
charts for their astronomy homework, and Ron offering to lend it to 
Harry to copy. At the start of PoA, Harry looks at a       of the 
solar system (I think) in Diagon Alley and thinks if he bought it he 
would never have to take an astronomy lesson. There are several other 
references as well, these are just the ones I can think of at the 
moment.

So I think it's safe to say they all take it and it isn't an elective 
(as they took it *before* PoA)
